Chapter 3: The Beginning of Hardship
◆
Having looped back from death, I recalled the scenes that had just unfolded, feeling a wave of dizziness.
If I do nothing, that catastrophe will repeat itself. I have to stop it at all costs, but what should I do?
I pictured the countless dragons descending on the royal capital, Laana. Dragons usually act alone, but those dragons were strangely coordinated.
Most likely, Demon King Zoga was commanding them. I’d heard that Demon Kings have the power to control monsters.
“If I can just prevent Zoga’s revival, could I stop that unprecedented disaster?”
For some reason, Demon King Zoga, who should’ve been killed by the hero, was in Laana. I can’t even imagine how that’s possible, but there must be a way to prevent his revival.
For example, if we assume his body is needed for revival, guarding it might stop it from happening.
My plan’s starting to take shape.
For now, I’ll reunite with Hero Eligion as fast as possible and have him defeat the Demon King.
◆
After that, I retraced my actions from the previous timeline.
I fell into a trapdoor, dodged the spears below, and entered the hidden room beyond. In the hidden room’s treasure chest, I acquired the skill <Acceleration> and defeated the Bugbears that appeared. Then, I reunited with Hero Eligion and guided him to where Demon King Zoga was.
From there, I observed the duel between the hero and the Demon King.
Just like last time, Hero Eligion won the fight.
He’s definitely dead.
I checked Demon King Zoga’s corpse, its chest slashed open. No heartbeat, no breathing. It doesn’t seem like he’s secretly alive.
“Kiska-kun, you look troubled. Something worrying you?” Eligion asked suddenly.
Apparently, my anxiety showed on my face.
“I’m worried about the Demon King reviving, so I was checking the body,” I said honestly, figuring it wouldn’t hurt to tell the truth.
“Haha, revival? You’re quite the worrier, Kiska-kun,” he laughed.
I’m not joking—I’ve seen the revived Demon King with my own eyes—but telling him the truth probably wouldn’t convince him.
“Well, if you’re that worried, we can just burn the body,” Eligion suggested.
“Is it okay to burn it?”
“I mean, we need proof of the kill, so I’ll take the head back, but the rest is fine.”
With that, Eligion swung his sword, severing the Demon King’s head from its body.
True, it’s common to cremate the dead. Burying them risks rare cases of them reviving as undead. So burning it does feel safer.
“Uh, do we have a magic stone…? Oh, I’m out. Do you have one, Kiska-kun?”
“I don’t have any either.”
A magic stone would let us start a fire, but I don’t have one on me.
“Oh, I know a place where we can get magic stones. Mind if I step away for a bit?”
“Sure, go ahead. Be careful.”
“Will do.”
I hurried through the dungeon.
Magic stones can be obtained by defeating monsters, so finding a suitable one would work. Wait, now that I think about it, there’s a hideout around here made by the vampire Judith. It had a stockpile of magic stones. Borrowing some from there would be easier than fighting monsters.
Hold on, that hideout existed in my time, a hundred years later. There’s no guarantee it’s here now. But Judith is immortal, so it’s not impossible she’s already using this dungeon as a base in this era.
Might as well check. If I recall, knocking on a wall around here should reveal a passage.
Found it.
Inside, I saw a bed and sofa, clearly arranged by someone.
So, even in this era, the vampire Judith is using this dungeon as her base. She might even be somewhere in here.
Muttering a silent thanks to Judith, I grabbed just enough magic stones.
Then I returned to where Eligion was.
“That was quick,” he said, seeing me return with an armful of magic stones.
“I got lucky and found a bunch.”
As I said that, I glanced at the person standing beside Eligion.
Paladin Kanaria.
Seems she reunited with him while I was fetching the stones.
“Hey, Kanaria-san.”
“Hmph, so you reached His Highness first,” she said.
While we talked, we prepared to burn the Demon King’s body.
“What are you doing?” Kanaria asked.
“Burning the Demon King’s body to make sure he doesn’t revive,” Eligion explained.
“Hm, but we’re taking the head back, right?”
“Of course.”
“Then there’s no issue.”
Eligion answered Kanaria’s question.
Using the magic stones, we started a fire and burned the Demon King’s body.
“Oh! There you are! Finally found ya!”
“Phew, we finally meet! I thought I was gonna die!”
“…”
By the time the dwarf warrior Gorgano, elf sage Nyau, and hooded assassin Nok arrived, the Demon King’s body was reduced to bones.
Then, just like the previous timeline, Nyau’s teleportation magic brought us outside the dungeon.
The villagers of Katarov greeted us with a grand welcome. Food and dancing were offered freely.
While everyone else relaxed, I stayed on edge.
The Demon King’s head was tied to a pillar in the village square, displayed for all to see.
I kept my eyes on it. As long as that head stays here, the Demon King shouldn’t revive.
“Hey, Kiska-kun, how’s it going?” Eligion called out.
He must’ve noticed my tension.
“I’m just worried about the Demon King reviving…”
“Haha, you really are a worrier, Kiska-kun.”
“Maybe so,” I nodded.
Eligion sat beside me.
“By the way, what’s your relationship with this Ageha you’re looking for?” he asked, probably just making conversation.
I’d asked him about Ageha when we first met. He didn’t seem to know the name at all.
“Well, Ageha’s someone important to me.”
“Family or something?”
“No, not family.”
“Then a lover?”
Not a lover, but I couldn’t think of a good word to describe my relationship with Ageha.
We’re not really connected, but all I want is to save her.
“Something like that,” I said, affirming it because denying it felt like too much hassle to explain.
“I see. If I ever meet her, I’ll let you know.”
“Thanks, that’d be a big help.”
I thanked him, my mind wandering.
Where could Ageha be? I thought she’d be working to defeat the Demon King since she’s a hero, but even after we defeated him, there’s no sign of her.
I want to see Ageha soon. Part of me wants to search for her right now, but preventing the Demon King’s revival takes priority.
“By the way, what’s your plan after this, Hero-sama?”
“Oh, we’ll stay in the village tonight and head to the capital early tomorrow.”
I see, so the hero’s going to the capital too. Then he must’ve seen the dragons attack the city in the previous timeline.
“What about the Demon King’s head?”
“Oh, we’re taking it with us, of course.”
“Can I come along?”
I don’t want to let the Demon King’s head out of my sight. That means sticking with the hero. It’s a tough request, but I need to convince him somehow.
“Sure, that’s fine.”
“Huh? Really?”
I was shocked he agreed so easily.
“You’re one of the heroes who helped defeat the Demon King. It’s only natural to treat you with respect.”
“T-Thank you!”
I bowed instinctively, and Eligion laughed.
◆
The next day, Hero Eligion and his party boarded carriages bound for the capital. The others were coming too, so we split into two carriages.
At my request, I got to ride with Eligion. Paladin Kanaria objected, but Eligion approved. Honestly, it wasn’t Eligion I wanted to stay close to—it was the Demon King’s head. But since I ended up in the same carriage as the head, it all worked out.
So, the first carriage held me, Hero Eligion, and Paladin Kanaria.
The second had dwarf warrior Gorgano, elf sage Nyau, and hooded assassin Nok.
With that, the carriages set off.
“The capital’s bound to give His Highness a grand welcome,” Kanaria said suddenly.
“That’d be nice,” Eligion replied.
“Indeed. By now, the capital’s probably in a festive uproar over the Demon King’s defeat. We’ll need a triumphal parade when we arrive.”
“A parade, huh? That’s kinda embarrassing. Will you join it, Kanaria?”
“If Your Highness wishes it.”
The two across from me chatted like that.
“Kiska-kun, will you walk with us in the parade?” Eligion asked.
“Huh? Is that okay?”
“I told you, you’re a hero who helped defeat the Demon King. You’ve got every right to join.”
I hadn’t dreamed I’d be part of it and was stunned. Unsure how to respond, I glanced at Kanaria.
Sensing my hesitation, she spoke.
“It’s His Highness’s suggestion. Accepting graciously is proper etiquette.”
I see, that’s how it works.
“Alright, I’ll join.”
That’s what I answered.
The conversation continued in the carriage.
Next to me, the Demon King’s head sat carefully placed. No sign of revival, and I hoped it’d stay that way.
Thud! The carriage stopped abruptly.
The sudden halt made it lurch.
“Wonder what happened?” I muttered.
“Yeah, we should check,” Eligion said.
At his suggestion, I opened the door and called to the driver.
“Hey, everything okay?”
Squish. I heard something being crushed.
Wondering what it was, I turned around.
Splat. Liquid sprayed, splashing my face.
What’s this? I wiped it with my hand.
It was red.
My hand was stained with bright red liquid.
“…Huh?”
It took a few seconds to realize it was blood.
“Haha! Finally, I killed him! Killed him, killed him, killed him, killed him, killed him, killed him! I killed him!!”
A laugh mixed with chant-like muttering reached my ears.
The one shouting was Paladin Kanaria.

◆
“What…?”
I couldn’t comprehend what was happening. Before me stood Paladin Kanaria, laughing with a twisted gaze, and Hero Eligion, slumped lifelessly.
Looking closer, a dagger was lodged in the hero’s throat.
Kanaria killed Eligion—that’s what it had to be, but I couldn’t accept it.
I didn’t understand.
Why would Paladin Kanaria kill the hero? I couldn’t fathom any reason for it.
“Why…?”
That’s why I muttered it.
I wanted an answer that made sense. Why did she kill him?
“Why, you ask…? Because the hero was in the way,” she answered, her lips curling into a smirk.
“Oh, right. Witnesses need to be eliminated.”
She glared at me, gripping her sword’s scabbard tightly.
This is bad… If this keeps up, she’ll kill me too.
As she swung her sword, I blocked with my <Blazing Sword>. But I couldn’t absorb the force, and my body was flung out of the carriage.
I still couldn’t grasp the situation, but one thing was certain: if I didn’t fight back, Paladin Kanaria would kill me.
“What’s going on!?” a voice shouted.
Someone must’ve noticed the commotion. Nyau poked her head out from the other carriage.
“Don’t come here!” I yelled, certain that if she did, Kanaria would kill her too.
In a few seconds, Kanaria would surely leap from the carriage to finish me off. I gripped my sword tightly, focusing every nerve.
Stay calm, stay calm, keep your mind steady. Don’t blink. Be ready to react the moment Kanaria comes for me.
I waited quietly. The sound of my heartbeat and breathing echoed in my ears.
…Huh? She’s not coming.
I was sure she’d jump out immediately, but there’s no sign of her. What’s going on? What’s Kanaria doing in the carriage?
“Fire Magic, Fourth Tier, < Scorching Flame Fuego Trio>.”
I looked to see Nyau conjuring a pillar of fire from a magic circle.
Why? What was she casting at? My mind raced as I followed the flames’ path.
“GYAAOOOH!!”
A roar?
The source was a dragon.
A dragon was perched, blocking the carriage’s path. Despite its massive presence, I’d been so focused on Kanaria that I hadn’t noticed it at all.
Why is a dragon here? I don’t know why, but it explains why the carriage stopped.
Either way, Kanaria isn’t my only enemy now. I have to deal with the dragon too.
Can I win…?
Doubt crept in, but I had no choice but to focus on fighting.
Clatter. The carriage shook slightly. In a few seconds, Kanaria would probably jump out.
I steeled my nerves.
“So, I just need to kill this guy, right?”
I froze, stunned.
It wasn’t Paladin Kanaria who leapt from the carriage.
It was Demon King Zoga himself, gripping a greatsword.
“What…?”
The moment I uttered those stunned words, my body was cut down by his blade.
◆
“Hah!”
I woke up.
I touched the spot where the greatsword had sliced me, confirming no wound and sighing in relief that I’d looped back from death.
“So, what does this mean…?”
My head was a mess.
Paladin Kanaria killed Hero Eligion.
It wasn’t impulsive—her words suggested she’d planned it. She was probably waiting for the perfect moment to strike in the carriage.
And then, Demon King Zoga, who should’ve been dead, emerged from the carriage.
I don’t know what happened inside. But one thing’s clear: Kanaria revived Zoga.
That makes Paladin Kanaria a traitor.
Still, learning that was a huge gain. A glimmer of hope appeared. Maybe I can stop Zoga’s revival.
◆
“Hey, what do you think you’re doing!?”
Hero Eligion grabbed my collar, shouting with barely contained anger.
“I’m sorry for acting on my own. But it was necessary to prevent the Demon King’s revival.”
I followed the same actions as the last timeline until Eligion defeated the Demon King.
Then, against his wishes, I did something on my own.
I burned the Demon King’s body—head and all.
“The Demon King’s body is crucial proof of our victory. Do you realize what burning it means?” Eligion demanded, still gripping my collar.
In the previous timeline, he’d said it was fine to burn everything but the head, since the head alone was proof of the kill.
But leaving the head led to Zoga’s revival. So, I had to burn it all.
“If the Demon King revives, all your efforts will be for nothing. Please understand.”
“There’s no way he’d revive! We need his head to reassure the people!” Eligion snapped, clicking his tongue and roughly scratching his head.
Honestly, I don’t care if I anger him, as long as I stop the Demon King’s revival.
Then, just like last time, Paladin Kanaria arrived.
Seeing the burned remains of the Demon King, she said, “Well, you’ve gone and done something reckless.”
I wondered what she was really thinking. It’d be great if she was furious that I’d thwarted the revival. But if burning the body doesn’t stop it, that’d be the worst.
I can only pray it’s the former.
◆
After reuniting with the others, we returned outside the dungeon via Nyau’s magic circle.
Even burned, the Demon King’s bones remained. We decided to bring them back as minimal proof.
Then, a feast began in Katarov Village. But maybe because the Demon King’s body was gone, it felt more subdued than the last timeline.
Amid it all, I kept thinking about a possibility.
Could the Demon King revive from just his bones? Kanaria looked angry when she saw the burned body, but not despairing.
Her expression seemed to say that burning the body wouldn’t stop the revival.
The more I thought about it, the more likely it seemed.
If that’s the case, I have to act.
In the dead of night, when the village was asleep, I got up and started moving.
“This is it.”
I held a wooden box containing the Demon King’s bones.
The box was carelessly left in the village square, making it easy to steal. Probably because no one thought anyone would take the Demon King’s remains.
I checked to confirm the bones were inside.
With the box in hand, I fled the village.
“Haa… haa… haa… haa…”
I stopped, thinking I was safe this far out. My breath was ragged from running full speed.
Then, I took the bones from the box and began smashing them to dust with the hilt of my sword. It was time-consuming work. No matter how much I crushed them, it didn’t feel like enough to prevent revival.
By the time I was satisfied, the sun was rising.
“No way it can revive after being crushed this much,” I said, looking at the powdered bones.
I scattered them into a nearby pond.
“Now, I just pray the Demon King doesn’t revive.”
I’ve done everything I could. Burned the body, crushed the bones, and scattered them in the pond. There’s no better move than this.
Flap. I heard wings. A gust of wind enveloped me.
Looking up, a dragon was descending from the sky.
“Hmm, quite the odd thing you’ve done,” a familiar voice said.
The figure landed before me from the dragon’s back.
“Kanaria…!” I shouted the name of the person in front of me.
How did she know where I was? The question surged, but it was too late—she’d come to retrieve the bones, but I’d already scattered them.
“I know all about your schemes,” I said.
“Hmph, and what schemes are those?” she retorted.
“You’re trying to revive the Demon King.”
“—What!? How do you…!?” Kanaria’s eyes widened, and she staggered back.
Got her. She’s clearly shaken.
“Too bad for you! I’ve crushed your plans! The Demon King’s bones are gone! What now? You can’t revive him anymore!” I declared, certain of my victory. The Demon King’s revival was stopped.
“I’m impressed. I didn’t expect a hidden threat like you,” Kanaria said, pulling something from her pocket—a ring embedded with a glowing gem.
“This is a one-of-a-kind ring made by my master. Its power? Resurrection.”
As she spoke, the ring began to glow, then shattered with a crack.
“Phew, now what’s this situation?” a voice said from behind.
No way, that voice…?
It can’t be… I turned around, dreading what I’d see.
“You thought a body was needed for resurrection, but sadly, you’re wrong. Your schemes were all for nothing,” Kanaria said confidently, delivering a devastating truth.
“Then what am I supposed to do?” I asked.
“Kill him,” Kanaria said, bowing to the figure.
“Got it,” the Demon King said, grinning wickedly.
At almost the same moment, his fist struck me.
“Gah!”
I groaned as my body was sent flying, toppling trees in its path.
“Guh… ahh…”
I coughed, spitting blood with each hack.
“Still alive, huh?” the Demon King said, carelessly lifting my head.
I had no strength left to resist.
Then, he smashed me against a rock.
As expected, my consciousness faded to black.
◆
Opening my eyes, I was back in the dungeon.
“…”
I had no motivation and spent a while just sitting there, dazed.
I went through all that effort to burn and crush the Demon King’s remains, and it meant nothing.
Still, I can’t wallow. There was a gain.
Learning about the ring was huge.
If I can steal that ring from Kanaria, I might have a good chance of stopping Zoga’s revival.
With that decided, I had to act.
First, I’d find where Kanaria is.
With a plan in mind, I headed straight to the room where Bugbears spawn in droves and acquired the skill <Acceleration>.
Last time, I went to where Eligion was. This time, I’ll search while avoiding him. Hopefully, I’ll find Kanaria easily.
“Found her…” I muttered.
There she was—Paladin Kanaria. She was on a higher floor than where Eligion would be, near a room with Golden Living Armors.
She was exploring alone.
I’d attack with intent to kill.
With that resolve, I lunged, swinging my <Blazing Sword>.
Clang! A metallic sound rang out as Kanaria blocked with her sword.
Damn, the surprise attack failed.
“What’s the meaning of this?” she demanded, glaring sharply.
“You know why,” I replied, too pressed to talk as I resumed my attack.
“Hmph, that was a foolish question. I knew you were trouble the moment I saw you, and it seems I wasn’t wrong,” she said.
Look who’s talking, you traitor siding with the Demon King, I thought bitterly.
Thus began my fight with Kanaria.
“What’s wrong? Your attacks are weak,” she taunted.
I was on the defensive the whole time.
The reason was simple: Kanaria was stronger and faster than me.
Each time I blocked her sword, my body reeled back, leaving openings. No wonder I was stuck defending.
“Shut up,” I spat, wiping sweat from my brow.
I still had one card to play.
“<Acceleration>.”
The skill I’d just gotten. For a short time, it boosts my speed.
“What…?” Kanaria gasped, stunned for a moment.
How’s that? You can’t take this attack so easily.
Thud. I heard a heavy strike.
It came from right behind me.
“Huh…?”
Before I knew it, my body was bent in an unnatural direction.
Someone had ambushed me from behind. By the time I realized it, I was crashing into a wall.
Who…?
I looked up.
“Kanaria, you okay?” the figure asked.
“I’m sorry, Your Highness, for troubling you. It’s my own incompetence…” Kanaria replied.
“No need to apologize for this,” the figure said.
It was Hero Eligion.
Right, I’d been guiding him to Zoga’s location until now.
By not doing that, he came here instead.
By the time I realized it, my consciousness slipped away.
◆
“That was a mistake,” I muttered, having looped back from death.
Attacking Kanaria while ignoring Eligion was clearly a misstep. To Eligion, Kanaria’s a trusted ally, while I’m just some guy he met recently. If we’re fighting, it’s obvious who he’d side with.
To avoid repeating that mistake, I need to carefully follow steps: guide Eligion to Zoga, then target Kanaria while they’re fighting.
Dealing with Eligion is simple enough.
The real question is whether I can beat Kanaria with my strength.
From fighting her, it’s clear she’s stronger. My rank is Platinum, while hers is Diamond, one rank higher.
Still, giving up is premature.
After all, I have <Save & Reset>. I can keep trying until I win.
◆
Attempt two at challenging Kanaria.
First, I guided Eligion to where Zoga was.
“I’m here to settle this,” Eligion said gleefully upon spotting Zoga.
Confirming their battle started, I hurried back the way I came. Now I could attack Kanaria without Eligion interfering.
“What’s the meaning of this?” Kanaria shouted.
I slashed at her without answering.
“I know you’re a traitor!” I yelled.
After a few attacks, Kanaria cut me down.
Looks like a loss this time. Not that I expected to win right away.
My fight’s only just begun.
◆
Attempt three: Stabbed through the heart by Kanaria, dead.
Attempt four: Brain severely damaged by a downward slash, dead.
Attempt five: Sword knocked away, then throat stabbed, dead.
Attempt six: Legs severed, immobilized, then beheaded, dead.
Attempt seven: Heart pierced immediately after the fight began, dead.
Attempt eight: Eyeball stabbed, then chest slashed, dead.
Attempt nine: Fought well but bled out from a side wound, dead.
Attempt ten: Dead.
Dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead…
Once again, I set out to challenge Paladin Kanaria.
◆
I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve died.
Probably over a hundred times, killed by Paladin Kanaria.
But the more I repeat, the closer my fights get. Just a few more tries, and I’m sure I can beat her.
Kanaria approaches from ahead. She hasn’t noticed me yet.
If that’s the case, there’s only one thing to do.
A surprise attack as a greeting.
“What—!?”
Kanaria reels in shock as I appear out of nowhere.
I swing my <Blazing Sword> without hesitation.
I aim for her knees, swinging low and wide.
As planned, she loses her balance.
But I can’t let my guard down. I know she’ll swing her sword vertically right after this. After all, I’ve fought her over a hundred times.
I take a big step to the side, then spin into a vertical slash. I know there’s a gap in her armor at her shoulder. I know exactly how to move to slip my blade into that gap.
“Gah!”
She groans, staggering back. This is it! The biggest opening I’ve ever gotten. I can’t let it slip away.
“Acceleration”
Using the skill, I boost my speed instantly. With that speed, I slice off her right arm.
Thud. Her arm, still gripping her sword, hits the floor.
I did it…! I cheer inwardly.
A swordsman without their right arm is as good as done. My victory is assured.
“You…!” Kanaria screams, her voice raw enough to shred her throat.
Her face pulses with veins, her rage unmistakable.
“Serves you right,” I say, flashing a smug grin. No matter how angry she gets, she can’t turn this around.
“Do it, Puppetmaster.”
Normally, she couldn’t have.
“…Huh?”
From her severed right arm, a shadowy black mass emerges. It swells, transforming into a massive jaw.
“Eat him,” Kanaria orders calmly.
The next moment, I’m devoured by Puppetmaster.
◆
“No way…”
I’m used to dying.
But being killed by Puppetmaster? Even I can’t hide my shock.
“Why does Kanaria have Puppetmaster…?”
I don’t understand. But I saw her wield it with my own eyes.
Who even is Paladin Kanaria? Why would she betray the hero? Maybe investigating her could give me a clue about turning Puppetmaster human.
With that resolve, I head toward her again.
◆
“To think the first person I’d run into is you,” Kanaria says, her voice dripping with dissatisfaction as she spots me.
“You know this dungeon well, don’t you? Then guide me.”
I’m not here to chat.
So I cut to the chase.
“Drop the act. I know you’re working for the Demon King.”
“—”
Kanaria’s face twitches slightly.
But she quickly composes herself, insisting, “What nonsense. I’m sworn to His Highness. There’s no way that’s true.”
Still trying to play dumb?
Fine. I know plenty of your secrets.
“The resurrection ring. The Parasitic Sword Puppetmaster. I already know your secrets.”
“…”
Her eyes widen, her expression dumbfounded.
“Pfft, hahahahaha!” she bursts into an eerie laugh.
“How does someone like you know my secrets…?”
Her creepy laughter sends a chill down my spine. This is a side of Kanaria I’ve never seen. Maybe this is her true nature.
“Answer my question, Kanaria. Why do you have the Parasitic Sword Puppetmaster
“My master gave it to me.”
That reminds me—she said her master gave her the resurrection ring too.
“By master, you mean the Demon King?”
It’s the obvious conclusion. She’s scheming to revive the Demon King and killed the hero.
“Don’t insult my master!” she roars suddenly, startling me with her intensity.
“My master is far nobler than any Demon King! Comparing them is outrageous!”
I process her words. So her master isn’t the Demon King? What does that mean?
“Who are you?” I ask.
“Let me tell you one thing. ‘Chaos Doctrine’—that’s the only word that defines us. I’m one of its followers.”
“Is this ‘Chaos Doctrine’ an organization?”
“Something like that,” she says, deploying the Parasitic Sword Puppetmaster. Looks like she’s done talking.
I resist its attacks as best I can, but it’s futile, and I die.
◆
So, Kanaria belongs to an organization called the Chaos Doctrine.
Its leader isn’t the Demon King. And that leader gave Kanaria the Parasitic Sword Puppetmaster.
That’s what I learned from our conversation.
I tried a few more times to dig deeper, but failed. She won’t spill anything crucial.
Still, my goal remains the same. Defeat Kanaria, stop the Demon King’s revival. Beyond that lies Ageha and the Puppetmaster.
With that resolve, I press forward.
Attempt one hundred fifty.
Through countless deaths, I’m slowly figuring out how to counter Kanaria.
First, I reassess the skills I should take from the room with the Bugbears. I’ve been choosing <Acceleration>, but is that really the best option? I decide to reconsider.
My status right after looping back looks like this:
Possessed Skill Points: 2430
<Save & Reset>
No level concept
<Taunt Lv3>
Remaining skill points needed for level-up: 1000
<Swordsmanship Lv3>
Remaining skill points needed for level-up: 3000
<Oath>
No level concept
Notably, I have a surprising 2430 skill points left.
Thanks to defeating the Katarov Dungeon boss, the Great Centipede Lumohaz, with Ageha, I’ve accumulated this many.
If I choose <Acceleration>, it looks like this:
<Acceleration Lv1>
Remaining skill points needed for level-up: 50
I spend 50 points to level it up.
<Acceleration Lv2>
Remaining skill points needed for level-up: 500
I have points left, so I spend 500.
Then it changes to:
< Acceleration Lv3>
Remaining skill points needed for level-up: 5000
I don’t have 5000 points, so it caps at level 3.
I’ve challenged Kanaria many times in this state, getting close but always losing when she uses the Parasitic Sword Puppetmaster.
So, I decide to consider alternatives to <Acceleration>.

〈Appraisal〉〈Taunt〉〈Strength Boost〉〈Endurance Boost〉〈Agility Boost〉〈Stamina Boost〉〈Vision Boost〉〈Hearing Boost〉
Magic skills require mana, so they’re out. If I could take two skills, <Mana Generation〉plus a magic skill might work, but that’s not an option. I also rule out non-combat skills like〈Memory Boost〉 .
That narrows it down to <Recovery Boost>, <Stealth>, <Physical Enhancement>, <Strength Boost>, <Agility Boost>, and <Stamina Boost>.
Now, which to choose…?
“Well, might as well try them all.”
I have <Save & Reset>. If I fail, I can die and try again.
◆
If I choose <Recovery Boost>:
I spend 550 skill points to reach level 3. It speeds up wound healing, making me better in prolonged fights, but against the Puppetmaster’s one-shot kills, it’s not very useful.
◆
If I choose <Stealth>:
I spend 550 skill points to reach level 3. It lets me move without being noticed by monsters along the way, which is convenient, but Kanaria spots me easily, so it’s not very effective.
◆
If I choose <Physical Enhancement>:
I spend 220 skill points to reach level 3. Unlike the others, it only takes 220 points. Probably because lower-rarity skills need fewer points to level up.
“Huh? This feels surprisingly good.”
While fighting monsters along the way, I notice it. With <Acceleration>, I could move fast to defeat enemies, but it drained stamina, limiting how often I could attack.
But <Physical Enhancement> boosts all physical abilities, making fighting much easier.
I still lose to Kanaria, though. But learning how effective is was a big win.
◆
If I choose <Strength Boost>:
Synthesis conditions met.
The moment I choose at the treasure chest, an unexpected message appears, startling me.
<Swordsmanship> + <Strength Boost> ▼ <Swordsmanship (Greatsword)>
Skill points needed for synthesis: 610
Finally, I understand what synthesis means.
It seems I can combine two skills into one.
What’s the benefit? Maybe, since you can only hold five skills, synthesis frees up a slot. There don’t seem to be any downsides, so I’ll try it.
I spend the points and acquire the new skill <Swordsmanship (Greatsword)>.
“Huh? This feels incredibly smooth.”
Fighting the Bugbears after getting the synthesized skill, I feel it.
I thought <Swordsmanship (Greatsword)> would only work with a greatsword, but that’s not the case. My sword feels unnaturally light.
It feels way easier to fight with than any other skill I’ve tried.
I still lose to Kanaria, though.
◆
If I choose <Endurance Boost>:
Synthesis conditions met.
<Swordsmanship> + <Taunt> + <Endurance Boost> ▼ <Knight’s Skills>
Skill points needed for synthesis: 1010
It seems choosing leads to a new skill, <Knight’s Skill>.
It sounds stronger than <Swordsmanship (Greatsword)>. Maybe this is the optimal choice.
“Huh? This is harder to fight with than I thought.”
Fighting the Bugbears, I feel it.
Why? I think it over and realize the answer.
My movements are sluggish.
Knights wear heavy armor, so moving is tough. I’m not wearing armor, but my body still feels oddly heavy.
I’ve always fought by moving swiftly to dodge attacks. Without armor, a single hit could be fatal. But <Knight’s Skill> forces me into the opposite fighting style.
It’s not a weak skill—my endurance is significantly boosted—but it just doesn’t suit me.
As expected, I lose to Kanaria.
◆
If I choose <Agility Boost>:
Synthesis conditions met.
〈Swordsmanship〉+〈Taunt〉+〈Agility Boost〉▼ <Thief’s Skill>
Skill points needed for synthesis: 1010
Looks like I can synthesize another new skill.
<Thief’s Skill>, huh? Doesn’t sound strong, but I’ll give it a shot.
I synthesize the skill, acquire <Thief’s Skill>, and face the Bugbears that appear when I open the treasure chest.
The change is immediate. First, I notice that my <Blazing Sword> feels heavy.
Thieves typically fight with short weapons like daggers. So, my <Blazing Sword>, not being a dagger, probably doesn’t mesh well.
Still, it’s just a slight restriction, not enough to make fighting impossible.
Another change becomes clear when the Bugbears attack.
“I can see their movements clearly.”
I felt the same with <Acceleration>, but my dynamic vision feels just as sharp now.
I can see the bears’ attack paths and predict their next moves like it’s second nature.
So, I easily dodge and strike their weak points with my blade.
Before I know it, I’ve cut down all the Bugbears.
“Yeah, this feels the best so far.”
Maybe with this, I can beat Kanaria.
◆
After acquiring <Thief’s Skill> and breaking through the Bugbears, I race through the dungeon to where Eligion is.
“Hey, Kiska-kun!” Eligion says with a cheerful expression when he spots me.
“Hero-sama, I’ll guide you to where the Demon King is.”
“You know where he is?”
“Yes, I have a good idea.”
“Really!? Lead the way!”
I guide Eligion to where Demon King Zoga is.
“Zoga, I’m here to settle this!” Eligion says gleefully.
“Shut up, you brat! I’m ready to kill you without you telling me!” Zoga retorts.
Confirming their fight begins, I backtrack to where Kanaria is.
If I don’t guide Eligion to Zoga, he’ll interrupt my fight with Kanaria and kill me.
Now I can focus on fighting her.
“To think the first human I’d find is you,” Kanaria says, looking displeased.
How many times have I died fighting her? I don’t know the exact number, but probably around one hundred thirty.
My condition is perfect. <Thief’s Skill> feels completely natural. Closing my eyes, I can recall every fight with Kanaria. I know her fighting habits inside out.
In this timeline, I’m absolutely confident I can win.
“I’m glad you’re safe, Kanaria-san,” I say, masking my intent.
Don’t let her sense my hostility. Flash a full smile.
“I’ve already met up with Hero-sama.”
“Really!?” Her face lights up slightly at the mention of the hero.
I can’t understand why someone plotting to kill him would be happy about his safety.
“Yes. I’ll guide you to where he is.”
“Please do,” she says, approaching me.
One step, two steps, three, four, five… This distance should be enough.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” she asks, eyeing me suspiciously as I don’t move.
“No, I was just waiting.”
Yes, I was waiting.
Waiting for her to get close enough for me to strike with certainty—
In a fraction of a second, I grip the handle of my <Blazing Sword> and draw it.
“—!” Kanaria, caught off guard by my sudden hostility, grips her sword.
But my blade is already slicing toward her neck.
Splatter. Blood sprays everywhere.
I don’t know what skills Kanaria has. But as a paladin, her endurance is likely enhanced.
Enhanced endurance means attacks are less likely to be fatal.
Even though I targeted the neck—a critical weak point—she’s still breathing.
“You bastard…!” she roars, swinging her sword down furiously.
I try to parry, but the force sends me flying backward.
“What’s the meaning of this…?” she demands, her anger mixed with calm calculation.
She’s secretly casting healing magic on her neck while talking, buying time to recover.
If that’s the case, there’s only one thing to do.
Press the attack now.
“Hey, Kanaria,” I say with a relaxed grin.
“What…?” She frowns, maybe finding me unsettling.
“Why does the leader of your Chaos Doctrine cooperate with the Demon King? It’s like they’re his lackey.”
“You… You dare insult my master!?”
Bingo. <Taunt> worked.
It is part of <Thief’s Skill> through synthesis, but I can still use it.
I figured insulting her master would rile her up, and it seems I was right.
The proof? She stops her healing magic mid-cast, throws her sword aside, and says, “Black Blade.”
<Black Blade> is one form of the Parasitic Sword Puppetmaster. Looks like she’s going all out from the start.
“I’ll kill you…!” she screams, charging with the <Black Blade>.
But thanks to <Taunt>, her attacks are sloppy, making them easy to dodge.
“Gah…!” she groans as I slash her side after dodging.
I don’t let up, striking again and again.
I keep dodging her attacks and landing hits. I’ve read her patterns completely. There’s not a chance in a million her attacks will land.
“This is checkmate,” I say, stabbing her leg as she lies on the ground.
In that moment, I’m certain of victory. Kanaria glares at me, grinding her teeth, but she can’t stand anymore.
“Here it is. The ring,” I say, pulling the pendant from her neck, revealing the ring needed to revive the Demon King.
“You… That’s…” she says, reaching out in panic.
I swat her hand away.
“Sorry, but I’m taking this ring.”
With this, I’ve stopped the Demon King’s revival.
And the world is saved.
“Hey, what’s going on here?” a third voice calls.
I turn to see Gorgano, the dwarf warrior, shouldering his axe.
A flashback hits me—of guiding Eligion to Zoga, only to be killed by him when he intervened.
This is bad…
I’m just a newcomer to them. Compared to Kanaria, I’m far less trusted. In this situation, where I’m fighting her, it’s likely he’ll side with her.
I finally got the ring. Is there any way to escape this?
“He stole the <Ring of Chaos>!” Kanaria shouts.
<Ring of Chaos>? Is that the ring I took?
“Got it. I understand the situation,” Gorgano says, giving me a cold stare.
Wait… How does Gorgano know about this ring?
“Hahaha! Listen, Gorgano’s one of us! You thought you won by beating me? Too bad!” Kanaria laughs.
“Shut up, Kanaria,” Gorgano snaps, silencing her. She stops laughing, holding her breath.
No way… There’s another traitor?
“Are you part of the Chaos Doctrine too?” I ask.
Gorgano neither confirms nor denies, only saying, “Parasitic Scythe: Madness.”
Instantly, a massive black scythe appears.
It’s clearly unnatural for a weapon, sprouting eyeballs and jaws all over.
“Yay, a fight!”
“Woohoo, a fight!”
“Can we eat this guy?”
The jaws on the Scythe speak.
The Parasitic Scythe: Madness…?
Is it like the Parasitic Sword Puppetmaster? If Gorgano’s with Kanaria, it’s not surprising he’d have a similar parasitic weapon.
“This is bad… That ring getting stolen is a big problem. It’ll mess up our plans,” Gorgano says.
“Those plans involve reviving the Demon King, right?”
“You know too much. Maybe we should be more careful,” he says, picking up the Parasitic Scythe Madness.
Looks like I have to fight. My stamina’s drained from fighting Kanaria, but I’m not out yet. I can still win.
“Madness, we’re going all out from the start.”
“Okay!”
“Got it, master!”
“Ugh, going all out is boring!”
“Shut up and obey, Madness.”
After their odd exchange, Gorgano says, “Predator.”
Instantly, the Madness transforms into a grotesque three-headed creature. It reminds me of the Parasitic Sword Puppetmaster’s third form, <Ruthless Predator>.
“Wha—?”
I’m sent flying before I realize it. Madness extended a massive tentacle to attack, and I couldn’t even perceive it.
I end up sprawled on the ground.
“He’s weak!”
“Super weak!”
“Not a big deal!”
Looking up, I see multiple jaws sprouting from the Madness Scythe, chattering.
“Hey, don’t waste words,” Gorgano says.
“Okay!”
“We’ll be careful!”
The jaws reply.
I’m transfixed by the bizarre sight.
Do I have to beat this…?
Anxiety wells up, but I can’t stop. I steel myself, grip my sword, and charge.
Chomp.
A sound comes from nearby.
By the time I realize it’s the Madness Scythe, it’s already eaten my right arm, sword and all.
“Aaagh!” I scream from the searing pain.
What happened…? I stare in shock at the blood gushing from my stump.
“Hey, is he tasty?”
“Kinda tough. Maybe because we ate the sword too?”
“Aw, I wanna eat some!”
The Madness Scythe’s three mouths chat cheerfully.
“Let’s eat the rest!”
It approaches me.
“No, stop…” I mutter, my will to fight gone. My weapon and right arm are gone. There’s no chance of winning. I’m sure I’ll be brutally killed.
“Here we go!”
The Madness Scythe opens its massive mouth, flashing sharp fangs.
“Stop, Madness Scythe.”
As the voice speaks, the Scythe freezes.
“Why?”
“We can’t eat him?”
“I’m hungry!”
“Listen to me,” Gorgano glares.
“Fine…”
“Stingy.”
The Scythe obeys Gorgano and backs off.
“Hey, Gorgano! Why stop the kill!?” Kanaria demands.
“Kanaria, this guy might be the hero’s apostle.”
“No way! That’s impossible!”
“Listen, to fulfill our master’s wishes, we have to consider every possibility.”
Enduring the pain, I strain to catch any information from their conversation.
“Hey, kid. Who are you?” Gorgano asks, grabbing my collar and lifting me.
Who am I? That’s a tough question.
“I’m Kiska, but…”
At a loss, I just give my name.
“Tch, not gonna answer properly, huh?” he says, tossing me aside.
The impact makes me cough blood, and my consciousness starts to fade.
“If he’s the hero’s apostle, killing him could cause trouble.”
What’s he talking about…?
I try to speak, but I have no strength left.
“So, we’ll seal him instead.”
The moment I hear those words, my consciousness blacks out.
◆
Ah, where am I…?
Opening my eyes, I think this to myself. An unfamiliar scene stretches before me. Not that it’s anything remarkable.
Just an endless void. No sky, no earth, no horizon—nothing.
I’ve seen something like this before.
When Black Ageha <Reset> the world, everything was destroyed, leaving a similar void. Back then, something calling itself the “Observer” spoke to me, and I was sent a hundred years into the past to save the world.
But this feels different somehow.
Why did this happen?
Right, Gorgano said something about sealing me. He must’ve sealed me. I don’t fully understand what “sealing” entails, but…
The first thing that comes to mind is Ageha. I once freed her from a seal in the Katarov Dungeon.
I don’t know if her seal and mine are the same, but it’s a strong possibility.
Why go through the trouble of sealing me, though?
I recall Gorgano’s words: “If he’s the hero’s apostle, killing him could cause trouble.” Does that mean he knew about my death loop? Instead of killing me, he chose to seal me.
If that’s true, it’s a huge problem. I’ll need to come up with countermeasures.
But thinking about it won’t help now.
First, I need to figure out how to escape this situation.
With that thought, I try to move—and realize I can’t.
Not a single step.
I can’t walk, move my hands, speak, or even blink. My body won’t budge, no matter what I try.
Only my consciousness remains.
What do I do?
The moment I realize I’m helpless, anxiety surges.
Is anyone out there!? I want to scream, but my mouth won’t move. Am I doomed to be trapped in this void forever?
The realization hits, and terror grips me.
An endless, unbearable boredom stretches ahead.
◆
How much time has passed since I was sealed?
With no clock or sun, I have no idea.
Just an endless, empty stretch of time.
I never knew doing nothing could be this agonizing.
God, I’m bored. In my boredom, I recall a story my mother told me.
The tale of the first hero and demon king.
This world was said to have been created when a demon god awoke.
That demon god was Deusgoat. The world under Deusgoat’s rule was nothing but darkness, destined to be ruled by it forever.
But then, a single god arrived.
The Supreme God Pythos. Pythos usually resided in a higher-dimensional realm. Even Deusgoat was merely a being born from Pythos.
Seeing the empty world, Pythos lamented, and a single drop of light was born.
That light illuminated the world.
Pythos then created spirits of fire, water, wind, and earth, tasking them with crafting the land, air, and seas we know today. Finally, Pythos breathed souls into existence, creating plants, animals, and sentient beings like humans and elves.
The world flourished, but someone grew jealous.
Deusgoat.
The demon god brought death and disease to the world. When the world endured, Deusgoat created monsters and dungeons to destroy humanity.
To counter this, Pythos granted skills to the sentient races. Those with skills decimated the monsters, so Deusgoat made his next move.
He unleashed demon kings and their demon clans to invade.
Humanity faced a crisis as the demon kings appeared.
In that desperate moment, a savior emerged.
The first hero.
Blessed by Pythos, the hero used their power to defeat the demon king.
But Deusgoat didn’t give up. Each time a demon king was defeated, a new one appeared, and a new hero arose to face them.
Thus, the battle between heroes and demon kings continues to this day.
That’s the story my mother told me.
There are more tales of the first hero’s exploits, but that’s all she shared. I don’t know what else the first hero did.
Thinking about it passes some time.
In this empty world, thinking is the only thing that keeps me sane.
◆
How much time has passed since I was sealed…?
I’m bored.
So bored I feel like my mind might break.
Isn’t there something to occupy me? Something to fill my heart.
Oh, right, let’s do math.
As a farmer’s son, I never got a proper education, but my mother taught me basic reading, writing, and counting.
Let’s see… 1 plus 1 is 2.
2 plus 2 is 4.
4 plus 4 is 8.
8 plus 8 is 16.
16 plus 16 is 32.
32 plus 32 is 64.
64 plus 64 is… 128.
128 plus 128 is… uh, 256.
256 plus 256 is 512.
512 plus 512 is 1024.
1024 plus 1024 is 2048.
…
…
…
268435456 plus 268435456 is 536870912.
How much counting will it take to escape this torment?
◆
How long have I been sealed?
It wouldn’t surprise me if someone said it’s been over a hundred years. It feels like an eternity.
All I see is endless darkness, nothing else.
I don’t get hungry or sleepy.
Just endless, boring time.
I never knew extreme boredom could be this painful.
God, I’m bored.
If only I could die, it’d be a relief.
If I died, I could rest peacefully.
How wonderful would that be?
I want to die.
I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die. I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die. I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die. I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die I want to die…
Please, someone, kill me…!
◆
…A light.
It came without warning.
I was expecting another day of endless boredom when it happened.
A light sparked before my eyes. A few seconds later, a sound like shattering glass.
The first change in this empty world.
The void before me cracks, as if a shell is breaking.
“Well, I finally broke the sealing barrier,” a familiar voice says.
The air of the outside world envelops me.
“Judith…”
It’s the vampire Judith.
She broke the barrier to free me.
Tears spill from my eyes at the realization.
Tears of joy.
She saved me from despair.
“Sorry to do this right after breaking the seal, but could you die? You’re very much in the way.”
As her voice rings out, I hear blood splatter.
Looks like she’s going to kill me.
She probably didn’t break the seal to save me. As someone who uses the dungeon as her home, I was just an obstacle she wanted to remove.
Still, the fact remains that she saved me.
Because if I die, I can start over.
Not being able to die was far more painful.
“Thank you, Judith. I love you.”
I say my thanks.
She probably makes a disgusted face, but my consciousness fades before I can see it.
◆
“Ah… I’m back…”
I open my eyes and look around. It’s the familiar dungeon. Looks like the death loop point hasn’t changed.
“That was a rough one.”
I never expected to be sealed instead of killed. Indeed, sealing prevents the death loop.
“Do they know about my death loop?”
The doubt creeps in.
Paladin Kanaria and Warrior Gorgano. They belong to that mysterious Chaos Doctrine.
I don’t know their organization’s goal, but if they know about my death loop, that’s a serious problem.
If I’m sealed again, my mind might break for good. I never want to go through that again.
But there are countermeasures.
“If I’m about to be sealed, I’ll just kill myself first.”
If I die by my own hand, I can trigger the death loop.
I don’t know the sealing process, but killing myself has to be faster.
So, I don’t need to worry about sealing…
What I need to do is stop the Demon King’s revival, right? Being sealed so long made it hard to recall.
My enemies are Kanaria and Gorgano. There could be others I don’t know about. That hooded guy Nok seems suspicious too.
For now, to stop the Demon King’s revival, I have to deal with these two.
Can I do it…?
In the last timeline, I was completely outmatched by Gorgano’s Parasitic Scythe Madness. No matter how many times I try, I can’t imagine winning.
Honestly, I’m anxious… but that’s no reason to stop.
I have to keep moving forward.
◆
Determined to fight Kanaria again, I retrace the last timeline.
I choose <Agility Boost> and synthesize it into <Thief’s Skill>.
Then I guide the hero to where Zoga is, and head to Kanaria’s location.
“Hey, I knew you’d show up here.”
Normally, only Kanaria would be here.
“Why…?”
Why is Warrior Gorgano here?
“You were right—he came,” Gorgano says.
“Kanaria, you doubted me?” he adds.
“No choice. Who’d think a plain guy like this could be our enemy?” Kanaria replies.
She’s standing next to Gorgano.
Wait, I can’t process this. In this timeline, I haven’t attacked them yet. So why do they see me as an enemy? Doesn’t everything reset when I loop? Why are their actions different?
“He’s got a bad vibe!”
“Smells dangerous!”
“Be careful, master!”
High-pitched voices ring out. It takes a few seconds to realize they’re from Gorgano’s Parasitic Scythe Madness .
“You look confused,” Gorgano says, watching my face.
“They told me to watch out for you.”
Did the Madness Scythe tell Gorgano about fighting me in the previous timeline?
Does it have the ability to perceive other timelines?
No way, I think, but then I remember.
The Parasitic Sword Puppetmaster acted differently across timelines too.
Once, in a timeline where we’d never met, it said, “Hmm, why do I feel like we’ve met before?”
So it’s not impossible for the Madness Scythe to have that ability.
The realization sends a chill down my spine.
Could the enemies I’m facing be far more dangerous than I thought?
“What’s wrong? Scared of us?” Gorgano taunts, seeing my stunned expression.
“No need to wait for him to attack. Let’s kill him now,” Kanaria says.
“Wait, no killing. He might be the hero’s apostle,” Gorgano counters.
“What?”
They start discussing me. I can’t let them seal me again.
“Damn it!” I shout, charging with my sword out of fear they’ll decide to seal me.
“Not much to you,” Gorgano says.
“Huh…?”
Before I know it, he’s behind me.
How…? As I wonder, blood sprays from my body. In an instant, Gorgano carved me up with his Scythe.
This is bad… If this keeps up, I’ll be sealed.
Before that!
My right arm, mangled from his attack, still holds the <Blazing Sword>. I throw myself toward its tip.
Crunch. The sound of it piercing my neck.
I managed to die before being sealed.
◆
“What do I do?”
I can’t help but think it.
I’ve been fighting Kanaria to stop the Demon King’s revival.
She was tough, but I thought I could win with effort, so I kept trying.
But now things have changed.
I have to face Warrior Gorgano.
His strength is on another level. The secret lies in his Parasitic Scythe Madness.
Kanaria uses the Parasitic Sword Puppetmaster, but she doesn’t seem to wield it fully.
Honestly, I handled it better than she did.
But Gorgano can draw out the Madness Scythe’s full power.
Can I beat him…?
“No way.”
No matter how many times I try, I can’t imagine winning. The gap in our strength is that wide.
But what else can I do…?
“You seem stuck, master,” a voice says.
Huh…?
I look up to see the Puppetmaster standing there.
“When did I start dreaming?”
“Who knows?” it says, tilting its head playfully.
If Puppetmaster is here, this must be a dream. Am I so cornered that it’s appearing in my dreams?
“Why not give up, master?”
“Huh?”
“Kanaria, Gorgano—who cares about them? Ignore them and get out of here.”
“But if I don’t stop them, the world will end.”
“Come on, since when did you start thinking like a hero? That doesn’t suit you.”
“Shut up.”
But I get what it’s saying. I died to turn Puppetmaster human, came back a hundred years to save Ageha, and still have no clue where she is.
And I’ve been dying over and over to stop the Chaos Doctrine alone.
“What’s wrong with the world ending? Why do you have to sacrifice yourself for it?”
“You’re right.”
It makes sense. It’s unfair that I’m the only one suffering for the world.
“Exactly. So give it up. Saving the world is too much hassle.”
Its words are comforting. Maybe I should just throw it all away and run.
“Staying here with you doesn’t sound bad.”
“Whoa, have you finally lost it? This is a dream, you know. I get that you’re obsessed with me, but staying together in a dream forever is a bit much.”
“Then I’ve got no choice but to keep going!”
If I can’t stay with Puppetmaster, I have to save the world.
“Hey, are you that into me? How much do you want to see me?”
“Yeah, I’m into you. I love you.”
“W-Well, hearing it straight like that is kinda embarrassing,” it says, looking shy.
But I don’t stop talking.
“I love you, Puppetmaster. I want to see you again. And I love Ageha too. That’s why I’ve been searching for her. And of course, I love Judith too.”
“…Naming other girls? You’re kind of a jerk,” it says.
“Fine by me. Being a jerk suits me better than being a hero.”
“True, that’s more like you.”
It feels like Puppetmaster smiled.
“If that’s how it is, I won’t say more. But you’re stuck with your current approach. You’re not cut out to be a hero, so leave it to someone else.”
With those words, it vanishes.
Looks like the happy moment is over.
◆
“Should I trust Hero Eligion more?”
I think about Puppetmaster’s advice from the dream.
Eligion has the power to defeat Zoga. If I can ensure he isn’t killed by Kanaria, even if the Demon King revives, Eligion can defeat him again.
It’s worth a try.
With that decided, I race through the dungeon to achieve my goal. I take <Agility Boost>, synthesize it into <Thief’s Skill>, and contact Eligion to guide him to Zoga.
After watching him defeat Zoga, I approach him with a new plan.
“Hero-sama, there’s something I need to tell you.”
“What’s with the serious face, Kiska-kun?”
I have to settle this before Kanaria arrives.
Now’s the time to warn him.
“There’s a traitor among your companions.”
“Hm?”
Eligion tilts his head at my words.
“Who’s this traitor?”
“Paladin Kanaria and Warrior Gorgano. They’re plotting to assassinate you.”
There, I said it.
Now Eligion will be wary of them. He shouldn’t be killed so easily.
Whoosh. The sound of slicing air.
Before I know it, Eligion’s sword is at my throat.
“What’s the meaning of insulting my companions?” he says, his voice low and menacing, unlike his usual cheer.
“Listen, Kiska. Nothing makes me angrier than someone insulting my companions. Kanaria betraying me? Don’t make me laugh. She’s been a knight in the palace since I was a child—she’s the person I trust most. Gorgano, I met after becoming a hero, but he’s fought by my side. He earned great honors in the last war against the demon king’s army. And you say they’re traitors? That’s not even funny as a joke.”
His eyes burn with anger.
Calm down.
I knew he’d react like this. To him, I’m just a stranger he just met. Of course he wouldn’t easily believe me.
But I’m not backing down.
“Hero-sama, I have the power to see the future.”
“What?”
“I can see it—Kanaria and Gorgano betraying you. I’d stake my life on it. If their innocence is proven, you can execute me.”
“…”
Eligion narrows his eyes slightly.
I hope he thinks my words are worth considering.
“So, I have a request. Always be on guard around them. You never know when they might turn on you.”
A long silence follows.
He’s clearly struggling with how to take my words.
“You said you can see the future. Can you prove it here and now?”
I blurted out that I could see the future for persuasion, but it’s not entirely a lie. I’ve seen the future after this moment many times.
“You’ve already seen my power, Hero-sama.”
“What do you mean?”
“I guided you to this place, didn’t I? I knew where Zoga was, so I brought you here.”
“…”
I don’t miss the way his eyes widen.
“…Why would they betray me?”
“They belong to a cult called the Chaos Doctrine. Their plan to kill you is likely the group’s will.”
He mutters quietly, “Come to think of it, Kanaria was the one who brought Gorgano along.”
“Do you know anything else about this Chaos Doctrine?”
“Their goal is to revive the Demon King and bring about the world’s end. Kanaria hides a ring that can resurrect him.”
Another silence. He’s probably weighing whether my words are trustworthy.
“You said you’d stake your life. Was that true?”
“Yes.”
“I see.”
Eligion nods, sheathing his sword with a “Sorry about that.”
“I’m not saying I fully trust you. But I’ll respect your words about staking your life.”
Perfect.
I smirk inwardly.
This time, I might just avoid the tragedy.
◆
After warning Hero Eligion, some time passed before Paladin Kanaria and Warrior Gorgano arrived. In previous timelines, only Kanaria came to this place alone. But this time, both showed up together.
The future must have changed because Gorgano, through the Parasitic Scythe Madness, became wary of me.
“Sorry to keep you waiting, Your Highness. I apologize for not being by your side at such a critical moment.”
“Good work, both of you. No need to apologize, Kanaria. We defeated the Demon King safely, didn’t we?”
“What, you already took down the Demon King? You stole all the glory, Hero-sama!”
Gorgano’s hearty laugh echoes.
Their conversation feels normal. It seems neither intends to act hostile in front of the hero.
I hope nothing happens, but I know better than anyone that’s unlikely.
“Phew! Finally found you! I thought I was gonna die out there!”
“…”
A bit later, Nyau the elf sage and Nok the hooded assassin arrive. Their actions haven’t changed much from the last timeline, but are they friends or foes?
With everyone gathered, we used Nyau’s teleportation magic circle to return outside the dungeon.
The villagers of Katarov welcomed us, and a feast was held to celebrate defeating the Demon King, just like in previous timelines.
“Hey, Kiska-kun, you enjoying yourself?”
Hero Eligion calls out as I sit on a chair in the plaza where the feast is happening.
“No, I’m not. I’m keeping watch.”
I haven’t joined the festivities, always keeping Eligion in my sight.
“Honestly, I thought you were overthinking it. I talked to them, and they seemed no different than usual.”
“Hero-sama, my foresight is never wrong.”
“…Is that so? Then, when the time comes, protect me, alright?”
“Uh, of course, that’s the plan, but…”
Honestly, Eligion is way stronger than me. I don’t think he needs my protection.
“Kanaria is my most trusted subordinate. If she’s really a traitor, I’d be too shocked to fight.”
“I see…”
If that’s the case, maybe I do need to protect him.
“But I think your foresight is wrong. So relax and enjoy the feast.”
With that, Eligion walks off. As the hero, he probably has to mingle with others.
“Hey, kid. Mind if I sit here?”
After a while alone, someone speaks to me.
My heart races when I see who it is—Warrior Gorgano. Without waiting for my reply, he plops heavily into the seat next to me.
“What’s your deal?”
Unsure of his intentions, I ask.
“Don’t be so on edge. I’m not here to fight.”
He chugs from the mug in his hand.
“So, kid, who the hell are you?”
Gorgano asks.
“I’m Kiska, an adventurer.”
“You know that’s not what I mean.”
“No idea what you’re talking about.”
He clicks his tongue in annoyance.
“We’ve been planning meticulously for decades, executing everything with utmost caution. And just when we’re nearing the end, you—an irregular—show up and mess with our plans.”
“You’re giving away a lot of info.”
I reply sarcastically to Gorgano’s rant.
He snorts, clearly irritated.
“…Whatever. The world’s full of mysteries, and you’re just one of them.”
He takes another swig.
“But we won’t give up. No matter how cunningly you try to stop us.”
His words, as if he’s the righteous one, confuse me.
“Why are you doing this?”
Curiosity gets the better of me, and I ask.
“Because our master wishes it.”
“Who’s this master?”
I recall Kanaria mentioning a master in another timeline. Who could it be?
“Only those in the organization have the right to know our master’s name. Like I’d tell you.”
“What if I said I’d join you?”
“Hah, as if I’d believe that. The organization already marked you as an enemy.”
Yeah, it was never gonna be that easy.
“But I’ll tell you one thing. The final battle’s tomorrow. So rest up and prepare.”
With that, Gorgano stands to grab more booze.
◆
After the feast, we stayed overnight in the village.
Tomorrow morning, we’re heading to the capital by carriage.
Our group, including me, stayed at an inn, each given our own room to sleep in.
Time to sleep and prepare for tomorrow? Yeah, right.
Gorgano said the final battle’s tomorrow, but that could easily be a lie.
In a previous timeline, Kanaria attacked Eligion in the carriage, so it might be true. But if it is, why tell me?
They probably don’t plan to fight Eligion head-on. My analysis says Eligion’s stronger than them. A direct fight would likely end in their defeat.
So, they’ll probably try to assassinate him.
And the classic time for an assassination? While someone’s asleep.
I should head to Eligion’s room and offer to guard him.
With that, I leave my room and head to his.
“Why are you here?”
Paladin Kanaria stands in front of Eligion’s door.
“No, why are you here?”
“I need to discuss tomorrow’s plans with His Highness. Now answer me—what are you doing here?”
What should I say?
Is Kanaria here to assassinate Eligion, or is she really just discussing plans?
And what does she think of me? Probably sees me as an enemy, like Gorgano.
“I have business with Hero-sama.”
“What business?”
“I don’t need to answer you.”
“I’m also His Highness’s guard. It’s only natural I’d be wary of someone approaching him.”
Her logic is sound, but I can’t back down. How do I get out of this?
Click. The door opens.
“What’s going on out here?”
Eligion pokes his head out.
“Your Highness, I’m sorry for the noise. I needed to discuss tomorrow’s plans.”
Kanaria calmly handles his sudden appearance.
“I’ve got something to talk about too!”
Not wanting Kanaria to shut me out, I raise my voice.
“Alright, both of you, come in.”
Eligion agrees easily.
“Your Highness, I don’t think it’s wise to let him in. I don’t believe he’s trustworthy.”
Kanaria tries to keep me away.
Not good. If Eligion listens to her, I can’t protect him.
“Kanaria, I gave my permission.”
Eligion’s voice carries an undeniable weight, like he won’t tolerate objections.
“My apologies for overstepping.”
Kanaria quickly backs down.
With that, I get to enter Eligion’s room alongside Kanaria.
What happens next is completely unknown.
But this way, I might be able to protect him.
◆
Inside the room, Kanaria and Eligion start discussing plans for heading to the capital tomorrow.
It seems her claim about needing to talk wasn’t entirely a lie.
Meanwhile, I’m restlessly watching them.
Kanaria could attack at any moment.
So, I carefully observe her every move.
So far, nothing suspicious.
“That’s all from me.”
Kanaria wraps up the discussion. It ended while I was watching.
“Alright, Kiska-kun, your turn.”
Eligion looks at me.
Oh, right, I said I had business to get in here.
“I came to offer to guard you, Hero-sama. We can’t rule out someone attacking while you’re asleep.”
“You’re right. Sleeping alone here is a bit careless.”
Eligion nods, seeming convinced.
“Your Highness! If you need a guard, let me take that role! Or do you trust some unknown adventurer more than me?”
Kanaria raises her voice.
She’s got a point—I’m less trusted than she is. But if she guards him, my plan goes up in smoke.
“Alright. Then both of you guard me together. With two, you can take turns sleeping. That’s the most efficient.”
Eligion concludes.
So, Kanaria and I end up guarding him together.
Eligion goes to bed and falls asleep.
Kanaria and I sit on chairs, keeping watch.
Neither of us speaks, so a heavy silence fills the room.
Is she planning to assassinate him while he sleeps?
Or is she waiting for tomorrow to make her move?
Not knowing her intentions, I have to stay alert for every possibility. It’s exhausting.
I’m starting to feel fatigue piling up.
And with it, sleepiness…
But I can’t sleep. Rubbing my eyes, I glance at Kanaria.
How’s she holding up? Isn’t she sleepy too?
…Huh?
Is that for real…?
I rub my eyes again to confirm.
Kanaria’s sitting in her chair, asleep.
She’s even snoring softly.
Seriously…?
A guard abandoning their post to sleep? Is that a thing?
Eligion did say we could take turns sleeping, so maybe she’s just following through.
Still, she could’ve said something.
It’s like she knows no one’s attacking tonight.
Does that mean coming here to guard was a waste?
The thought brings a wave of exhaustion.
Now I’m getting sleepy too…
◆
Crash. A sound jolts me awake.
I must’ve dozed off.
I’m ashamed, but first, I need to check on Eligion and Kanaria.
He’s fine, sleeping in bed. Kanaria’s still asleep in her chair.
So what was that sound? What woke me up?
“Hey.”
A voice from right behind me sends a chill down my spine.
“How you feeling?”
It’s Gorgano.
The sound must’ve been him entering the room. I thought the door was locked, but it’s been dutifully broken.
“What do you want?”
“Just wanna have a little chat.”
“About what?”
“Not something to talk about here. Come outside for a bit.”
“I’m not leaving this room.”
“Hmph, fine.”
He mutters, clearly annoyed, before shouting, “Kanaria, change of plans! We’re going straight for it!”
As Gorgano yells, he deploys the Parasitic Scythe Madness .
I block with my <Blazing Sword> , but the force sends me crashing into the wall.
But that’s not my main concern.
The moment Gorgano shouted, Kanaria—who seemed asleep—leapt up and swung her sword at Eligion.
“You’ll die!”
I shout, abandoning my usual politeness in this emergency.
“Tch, missed.”
Kanaria mutters.
Her sword is poised to stab the bed, aimed at Eligion’s neck.
“What’s the meaning of this, Kanaria? Care to explain? Maybe it’s a big misunderstanding.”
Eligion smiles calmly despite the sword at his throat.
Kanaria’s response is simple: “No need for talk!”
She swings.
With just a slight move, she could decapitate him.
He’s going to die.
At least, that’s what I thought.
“Gah!”
The groan comes from Kanaria.
Her body slams into the wall.
“Guess I was underestimated.”
Eligion grabs his sword.
He’s still alive.
“I can’t believe you’re actually a traitor.”
Eligion glares coldly at Kanaria.
She struggles to stand, likely from being thrown by Eligion.
“So, Kanaria, what’s your excuse?”
“There’s no excuse.”
“Hmm, that doesn’t add up. You’ve been loyal to me all this time. I trusted you the most. Yet here you are, turning your blade on me. There has to be an extraordinary reason. So, tell me.”
Eligion steps closer.
“Pfft, hahahahaha!”
Kanaria lets out a stifled laugh.
With a creepy grin, she responds, “Your Highness, I’ve never once been loyal to you from the bottom of my heart. If you thought otherwise, my acting was just that good!”
Eligion frowns, clearly displeased.
“Your Highness, let me be honest with you. I hate you. I hate you so, so, so, so, so much! So, just die quietly.”
Kanaria swings her sword again.
But Eligion deflects it with a single swing.
“Looks like I misjudged you.”
“Hey, you don’t have time to look away!”
Gorgano suddenly attacks me.
“Shouldn’t you be helping her?”
I parry his attack.
From what I can see, the gap between Kanaria and Eligion’s strength is obvious. No matter how hard she tries, she can’t beat him. But if Gorgano joins her, they might have a slim chance.
“No need.”
Gorgano continues his assault.
His confidence, as if he’s certain Kanaria can win, puzzles me.
Whatever.
If I keep Gorgano occupied, Eligion can defeat Kanaria, and then we can take Gorgano down together.
“So everything you did for me was a lie?”
“Yes, all lies.”
Eligion and Kanaria argue while fighting.
“Then why serve me all this time?!”
“For today. To kill you. I endured and endured and endured and endured and endured to serve you, just for this moment!”
“You hated me that much?”
“Haha, yeah! I despise you.”
“Why do you hate me so much?!”
“Oh, you want to know that badly? I’ll tell you.”
Kanaria’s tone suddenly turns cold.
“I’m a survivor of Luna Village.”
“Huh…?”
Eligion lets out a stunned sound.
Luna Village? I tilt my head at the unfamiliar term.
“If you’re as perceptive as you seem, Your Highness, you must understand how much I hate you.”
“No, that’s a lie…! You’re the second daughter of the Glysis family!”
“No, I’m a bastard child of the Glysis family. I was born from an affair. Because of that, I was sent to a couple in Luna Village as a child. They took great care of me. Even now, I consider them my true parents.”
“You never said a word about this…!”
“Of course not. If I did, the plan would’ve been ruined.”
“No, that’s not…! I was just a kid back then. I was used, I didn’t know anything…!”
“Yes, I know you were just used. But that’s a trivial detail. The fact remains that you killed the family that raised me.”
“No, no, no…!”
Eligion’s demeanor visibly crumbles.
Has he lost the will to fight? He stops swinging his sword, slumping with his head down.
“You’ll die!”
“Your voice won’t reach him anymore.”
Gorgano smirks at my shout.
This is bad…! If Eligion’s like this, it’s only a matter of time before he’s killed.
I have to do something!
“So, Your Highness, just die quietly.”
Whoosh. The sound of slicing air.
Blood sprays violently.
Clang. Eligion’s sword falls to the floor.
“I did it…! I did it, Gorgano! I finally killed him. At last, I did it. I killed His Highness!”
“Hey, Kanaria, save the celebration for later. We’ve got to deal with this guy next.”
The hero’s been killed…
There’s no coming back from this.
I can’t take on both of them alone. Before I get sealed like in a previous timeline—
“Damn it, he’s gonna kill himself!”
I hear Gorgano’s voice.
At the same moment, I slash my own neck.
◆
“Seriously…?”
I looped back to just after entering the dungeon, but I’m reeling from the shock.
I never expected Eligion to be killed by Kanaria.
I didn’t see that coming.
“But this approach can’t be wrong.”
Relying on Eligion doesn’t feel like a mistake.
This attempt failed, but if I keep trying, I’ll eventually reach a future where Eligion wins.
So, I’ll try the same method again.
◆
I retraced the last timeline’s actions.
“No, no, no…!”
Before me is a shaken Eligion.
Not long after, Kanaria kills him.
Ugh, another failure.
With that conclusion, I slash my own neck with my sword.
◆
My third attempt at relying on Eligion.
I struggle to stop Kanaria from mentioning Luna Village—the trigger that breaks him—but…
“Hey, don’t get in the way.”
Gorgano pins me down, leaving me helpless.
In the end, Eligion, still despondent, is killed.
Another failure.
◆
Fourth attempt.
I decided to warn Eligion beforehand that Kanaria is a Luna Village survivor.
If he knows in advance, maybe her revelation won’t shock him as much.
So, after warning him in the dungeon about Kanaria and Gorgano’s betrayal, I mention it.
“Kiska-kun, I’ll get angry if you keep talking.”
The moment I bring up Luna Village, Eligion’s face turns blatantly displeased.
“Please don’t forget. Kanaria is a survivor of Luna Village and holds a grudge against you!”
“Shut up!”
Thud. A sharp impact.
He punches me full force in the stomach.
I groan but keep my eyes on Eligion.
“Listen, say that again, and I won’t hold back.”
After that, Eligion becomes cold toward me.
In previous timelines, he let me guard him in his room, but this time, he refuses to even let me in.
Luna Village must be a deeply taboo topic for him.
As a result, Eligion is killed by Kanaria, just like before.
◆
Fifth attempt, another failure.
Sixth attempt, another failure.
Seventh attempt, another failure.
Eighth attempt, another failure.
Ninth attempt, another failure.
…
…
…
…
Thirtieth attempt, another failure.
◆
Thirty-first attempt.
“If this doesn’t work, I’ll give up.”
Having looped back through death, I think this to myself as I walk through the dungeon again.
No matter how many times I try, Hero Eligion keeps getting killed by Paladin Kanaria.
If this attempt fails too, I’ll come up with a different approach next time.
With that decision, I head toward Eligion’s location once more.
From then on, nothing differed from previous timelines.
I warn Hero Eligion that Paladin Kanaria and Warrior Gorgano are traitors.
“I’m not saying I fully trust you. But I’ll respect your words about staking your life.”
It’s a line I’ve heard countless times.
“…Thank you.”
I bow my head.
Then, we return outside the dungeon using Sage Nyau’s teleportation magic circle.
Afterward, a feast is held in Katarov Village to celebrate our victory, just as I’ve experienced many times before.
“Hey, Kiska-kun, you enjoying yourself?”
As I sit idly at the feast, Hero Eligion speaks to me.
We exchange some casual conversation.
I don’t mention Luna Village at all. Bringing it up would only enrage him.
“You look kind of down, Kiska-kun.”
Eligion suddenly says.
Down, huh…
Maybe I am exhausted from repeating the same events over and over.
“Maybe I drank too much.”
“Then you should rest, don’t you think?”
“Sorry, I’ll do that.”
“No need to worry about it.”
With Eligion’s kind permission, I stand to find a place to rest.
If I stayed at the feast, Gorgano would probably talk to me next.
Honestly, that thought depresses me. Why do I have to chat with an enemy I’ll soon fight to the death?
So, I’ll rest somewhere no one will find me.
The battle won’t happen until night anyway. Until then, how I spend my time shouldn’t matter.
“This should be far enough.”
I mutter as I reach an alleyway away from the feast.
No one should find me here. With that thought, I sit on the ground.
“Fnya! W-Why are you sitting next to me!?”
“Huh?”
I look toward the voice and see Sage Nyau sitting on the ground.
She was so small I didn’t notice her until now.
“No, you just happened to be where I sat.”
“No way! You clearly saw me sitting here and sat right next to me!”
“…You’re just too small to notice.”
“S-Small…!? You just called me small! Fghh—!”
She’s getting loud, so I grab her mouth to stop her from talking.
She mumbles something, trying to speak, but after holding on for a bit, she finally quiets down, seemingly giving up.
“Finally, some peace.”
I let go of her mouth.
“You covered my mouth so I couldn’t breathe! I thought I was gonna die!”
“Don’t lie. You could breathe through your nose.”
We have that exchange as I lean against the wall and stretch.
I wish the feast would end already.
“Why’d you come to a place like this…? The feast is still going on.”
“I got tired of talking to people. So I escaped.”
“I see.”
“Why are you here?”
Come to think of it, I never saw Nyau during the feast in previous timelines. To think she was hiding out here.
“I’m bad with places like that.”
“Why’s that?”
“Everyone’s drinking, right? I want to drink too, but…”
“No way, kids shouldn’t drink.”
“Ugh! That’s why I hate it! There’s always someone who treats me like a kid!”
Nyau’s eyes tear up as she says this.
Doesn’t she realize getting teary over something like this is why people treat her like a kid?
“Sorry about that. Here, have a drink.”
Still, crying is annoying, so I offer her the mug of ale I brought for myself.
Nyau takes it and sips.
“It’s gross!”
That’s her one-word review.
See, she’s totally a kid. But I’m nice, so I don’t say it out loud.
“W-Why are you laughing at me!?”
Nyau’s accusation makes me realize I was laughing.
It feels like it’s been forever since I laughed like this.
“Sorry, cheer up, okay?”
After laughing my fill, I end up having to soothe an annoyed Nyau.
“I’m not mad…”
She says, puffing out her cheeks. She’s clearly mad. Well, if she insists she’s not, I guess it’s fine.
Still, despite all the timelines I’ve repeated, this is the first time I’ve talked with Nyau like this.
Since it’s a rare chance, maybe I should probe a bit more about her.
Kanaria and Gorgano are traitors, but what about her?
I have no proof, but I feel like she probably isn’t a traitor.
If she were, her ditzy personality would likely give her away instantly.
Maybe I should ask her to team up.
“Hey, Nyau, does the term Luna Village ring any bells?”
Before diving into the main topic, I ask her about Luna Village, which Kanaria mentioned.
“Luna Village? Oh, I’ve heard of it. I think it was a village purged long ago for siding with demons.”
I see, so that’s the story.
Eligion, the first prince, must have been involved in that purge. That’s why Kanaria hates him.
“It seems Kanaria’s connected to Luna Village.”
“Huh? I thought she was from a noble family…”
“I don’t know the full details, but apparently, she’s a bastard child born from an affair with a count and was sent to Luna Village as a kid.”
“Hmm, is that so?”
“And it seems Kanaria holds a deep grudge against Hero-sama.”
“Wha—? Really?”
Nyau tilts her head.
Yeah, seeing Kanaria normally, you’d never guess she harbors such hatred for Eligion.
“It sounds like Hero-sama was involved in the Luna Village purge.”
“So… to Kanaria-san, it’s like Hero-sama killed her parents?”
She catches on quick. She’s not a sage for nothing.
“And tonight, Kanaria plans to kill Hero-sama. By the way, Gorgano’s in on it too.”
Now, how will Nyau react?
If she’s not a traitor, she might show some willingness to help.
“Huh…? What are you talking about?”
Nyau frowns.
“Kanaria-san betraying Hero-sama? No way she’d do that.”
And she even mocks me a bit.
…Yeah, she doesn’t believe me.
I expected this, but it’s still a little disappointing.
“Fnya! W-Why are you pinching my cheeks!?”
“Because I’m annoyed.”
That aside, I decide to pinch her cheeks.
I was an idiot for expecting anything from Nyau.
◆
Midnight arrives.
As in previous timelines, the battle is about to begin.
I’ve failed so many times, determined not to let Eligion die.
Honestly, I don’t think this attempt will succeed either.
No matter how hard I try, I can’t picture a future where Eligion survives.
With this mindset, I’ll probably fail again.
“Alright, let’s do this.”
I slap my cheeks to shake off the negativity.
If this fails, I’ll give up.
That’s what I decided when I looped back. If it doesn’t work, I’ll try a completely different approach.
This is my last shot at this method, so I’ll give it everything.
With that resolve, I head to Eligion’s room.
It’s almost time…
I’m guarding Eligion alongside Kanaria, near the bed where he sleeps.
Soon, Gorgano will break in, and the fight will start.
“Hey, you doing alright?”
Gorgano, having quietly broken the lock, enters and calls out to me.
“I feel like crap.”
“Oh, do you? Look, no offense, but could you step outside?”
“No way. You’re planning to kill Hero-sama once I leave, right?”
“Huh, so our plan’s busted. Whatever. Let’s go for it, Kanaria.”
Instantly, Kanaria opens her eyes and lunges at Eligion.
At the same time, Gorgano slashes at me.
Previous timelines proved Eligion won’t be killed by Kanaria’s surprise attack.
Now, I just need to stop her from saying “Luna Village.”
“Hey, you don’t have time to look away. I’m your opponent.”
Gorgano stands in my way.
Damn it, I need to shut Kanaria up, but he keeps blocking me every time.
If only there were some kind of breakthrough…
“I’m a survivor of Luna Village.”
I hear Kanaria’s voice.
It’s over. Now Eligion will lose his will to fight and get killed.
So, another failure.
“What… are you doing?”
It’s so sudden I can hardly believe it.
Nyau stands at the door, holding her staff, her eyes wide at the commotion.
“Nyau! Protect the hero!”
“Y-Yes!”
Nyau responds and starts chanting.
Nyau’s unexpected arrival changes the future drastically. Maybe, just maybe, I can save Eligion from death this time…!
“Tch, what a pain in the ass.”
Gorgano clicks his tongue, looking at Nyau.
At the same time, he speaks to the Parasitic Scythe Madness .
“Predator”
Suddenly, the Madness Scythe transforms into a monstrous three-headed creature.
Oh, right.
Gorgano’s been holding back on me this whole time.
Killing me instantly would’ve been child’s play for him.
“Damn it!”
I thought this time might actually work…
Another failure.
Crunch. The sound of being torn apart.
The bites into my neck.
Soon after, my consciousness fades.
◆
“Ah…”
I open my eyes.
It’s a familiar sensation. Looks like I looped back again.
Time to start over from scratch.
With that thought, I sit up.
“Ah, don’t move yet! Your wound hasn’t healed!”
“Huh…?”
The scene before me is unfamiliar.
For some reason, I’m lying in a forest, with Nyau crouching nearby.
“What’s going on…?”
“What? I carried you here after you passed out. You should thank me. If it weren’t for me, you’d be dead right now.”
As I listen to Nyau’s explanation, I touch my neck.
That’s right, the bit me here.
Oh, the wound’s still there.
“Don’t touch it! I’m in the middle of healing it!”
It looks like Nyau’s casting healing magic on me.
I finally understand the situation.
Somehow, I survived.
